What is Ochratoxin?
Ochratoxins are a group of mycotoxins produced by some Aspergillus and Penicillium species, especially P. verrucosum. Ochratoxin A is the most prevalent and relevant fungal toxin of this group. Ochratoxin is commonly referred to as OTA.
OTA can reduce immune function, inhibit energy production, and can even be a contributing factor to autism. Most commonly found in a variety of agricultural commodities worldwide, ranging from cereal grains to dried fruits to wine and coffee, OTA has also been associated with mold exposure due to water-damaged buildings.
Exposure to OTA is via ingestion or inhalation and the symptoms are very similar to other mold toxin exposure displays.
Common Exposure Symptoms
- Fatigue
- Chronic pain
- Brain fog
- Various GI symptoms
- Immune imbalances like autoimmune or immune suppression
- Insomnia
- Headaches and migraine
- Frequent urination and low urine output over time (low kidney function)
How Does Ochratoxin Make People Sick?
Ochratoxin is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract as it travels with other waste as part of our body’s elimination process. It is through the absorption that toxins are delivered to our system. Consequently, the best remedy is to prevent the absorption process. That is why special diets and binders are commonly used to stop or slow the absorption of OTA.
Testing for Ochratoxin
A urine test is the best and most recommended procedure.
These are the two laboratories that offer the test analysis:
- Realtime Laboratories, Inc.
- Mosaic Diagnostics (formerly Great Plains Laboratory, Inc.)
Does Air Sampling Aid in Finding Ochratoxin?
A first step in determining if your home or office has a mold issue is an examination that would include air testing. Air testing is simple and fairly inexpensive. However, it is more important to work with a professional who understands how to read and interpret the results. Learn more about our air quality testing services HERE.
